List of 3 single family office investing in funds

Many family offices rely on external asset managers for their investments. Hence, the family offices are investing in different funds: venture capital funds, private equity funds, hedge funds, equity funds, debt funds, infrastructure funds, etc. Our keyword crawler analyzed the websites of all family offices offices in our database and compiled an overview of fund-investing family offices. In the following, we are introducing you to three family investment vehicles from our list.

1. Capricorn Investment Group (New York, USA)

Jeff Skoll is a Canadian billionaire who was the first president of eBay. Besides being an important philanthropist, Skoll also launched the Capricorn Investment Group which also manages his personal wealth. The firm operates a “Technology Impact Fund” and “Technology Impact Growth Fund” that directly invests in companies. But, the Skoll family office is also running a “Sustainable Investors Fund” that invests in sustainable public and private asset managers and funds. Investments include asset managers like Inherent, Norselab and Lafayette Square.

Update 2023: The fund-focused single family office from America stays an active investor. In March 2023, it was announced that Capricorn invested in Matchday’s $21M seed round that works on a Web3 platform for soccer.

2. Kedge Capital (Jersey, UK)

The Bertarelli family belongs to the wealthiest Europeans family, managing billions of euros. The family operates various asset managers that serve as their family offices. One of these asset management firms is Kedge Capital, which was initiated in 2002. Kedge Capital invests mainly in hedge funds and private equity funds. Targeted hedge fund managers are operating multi-strategy, event-driven, global equity, global trading and long term trading strategies. Also, the family office invests in private equity funds in the USA and Europe, as well as Asia. Additionally, Kedge Capital is also pursuing direct private equity investments.

How many family offices are investing in funds?

We found more than 599 global single family offices that are mentioning funds on their website. Based on more than 1,600 analyzed family offices, that leads to a rate of more than 37%. Fund-investing family offices include the US Capricorn Investment Group, Jersey-based Kedge Capital or the Australian family office Prisma Investment. Investments in equity funds, hedge funds, debt funds, infrastructure, PE and VC (as LPs)

Our research team found that the single family offices from our list are pursuing different fund investment strategies. Many are relying on external asset managers for their stock market investments. This includes regular asset managers as well as specialized hedge funds. Furthermore, also debt funds and credit strategies are often part of single family office portfolios. Of course, also many family offices are investing in private equity and venture capital funds as so-called Limited Partners (LPs). Also infrastructure investment funds are mentioned.

In this list we combine two unique assets: our global database with more than 1,600 global single family offices and our expertise in building web crawlers and analysis tool. We used an alnlysis tool to check if the websites of the family offices from our database cover fund-related keywords, such as „funds“ or „fund“. The resulting list contains all the data from our family office lists, as well as dedicated keyword analysis columns. The list include all family offices from our database that have at least 1 relevant fund keyword occurrence.

Keyword Crawler Methodology: how we identify fund investment focused family offices

The size of our database makes it impossible to check each family office website individually for relevant keywords. Therefore, we have developed a Python-based tool that does the work in a three-step process.

  1. Each family office website in our database is crawled and searched for subpages.
  2. Using the appropriate keywords, the individual sub-pages are crawled, and the number of keywords mentioned is counted and set in relation to the total number of words on the page. From this we can calculate various statistics (see below) and thus highlight the subpage with the highest number of occurrences.
  3. Finally we use the results in combination with our global family office database to create a customized list of fund investor single family offices.

Results of the keyword analysis: data points included in the list

Like all our regular family office lists, the list of fund investor single family offices contains contact details, executives, background information and detailed investment focus information. In addition, the list is populated with the results of the keyword analysis, namely:

  • total_frequency (e.g.: 16) – total counted occurrences of keywords on family office website
  • average_keyword_rate (e.g. 0.1) – average rate of keyword occurrences per subpage in relation with total number of words
  • most_common_keyword (e.g. „funds“) – keyword that was counted the most often on family office website
  • most_common_keyword_frequency (e.g. 10) – number of times the most common keyword was counted
  • sub_url_highest_rate (e.g. – sub url with the highest number of found keywords
  • highest_rate (e.g. 0.1) – highest keyword rate per subpage
  • frequency_per_keyword: {‘funds’: 0, ‘fund’: 828, ‘etf’: 2078} – dictionary of number of keyword occurrences per keyword

Analyzed keywords and crawler settings

Our crawler analyzed the family office websites for the following keywords: “funds”, “fund”, “etf”.

Thereby, we cover fund-related keywords in the main language for the countries covered in our database. Our Tool crawled each family office website for at least 60 seconds.

Pros and cons of our keyword-based approach

Our list Is the perfect starting point for getting in touch with single family offices in the fund investment space. By crawling the websites of the family offices and calculating keyword occurrence rates, we managed to identify the most relevant family offices. However, our approach has two possible pitfalls. First, our keyword crawler only works if the targeted keywords are mentioned on the website. That’s often the case, since throughout the last years, many family offices started communicating their investments. However, if a family office does not have a website or keeps its activities secret, it won’t be mentioned. Second, since we can not interpret the context of the keywords, false positives are possible. For instance, if a family office writes an article why it is not investing in funds, it would still be in the list. In addition, we can not deliver results if the website effectively blocks our crawler (which is rarely the case).

All in all, we are convinced that our list offers a highly relevant starting point for identifying the most relevant fund investing family offices.
