Description

List of 3 renewable energy investor single family offices

Single family offices are an important source of capital for projects in a wide range of areas. Especially the renewable energy sector requires significant amounts of capital to realize upcoming solar and wind energy projects, as well as investments in startups working on novel technologies and green energy solution. In the following, we are introducing you to three exciting startups that had high renewable energy keyword rates in our analysis and that are, accordingly, part of list of the largest renewables focused single family offices in the world.

1. Libra Group (London, UK)

The Libra group is the family office and family holding for the Logothetis family, led by George Logothetis. The firm is active in various areas, amongst them the renewable energy industry. In our analysis, the family office reached an average renewable energy keyword rate of 1.4%. In the renewable energy field, the firm invests in companies that develop solar, wind as well as waste-to-energy projects. The portfolio companies are owning and developing more than 200 projects. Portfolio companies include Greenwood Energy (working on cleantech solutions in Latin America), Euro Energy (realizing solar parks and wind farms in Europe) and Convergen (renewable energy service provider in the US).

Update 2023: In March 2023, Libra Group announced a change in its leadership team: Praveen Vetrivel takes over as Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

2. Kilara Capital (Prahran, Australia)

Kilara Capital was created as investment vehicle of the Ben Krasnostein and Cassy Liberman family office. The family office, which is also accepting investments in its funds from third-party investors, is an active investor in the renewable energy sector. It also reached an average keyword rate of 1.4%. Kilara is active as major developer of wind and solar energy projects. For instance, the firm is realizing the Wilan Energy Park in the “Southwest Renewable Energy Zone”. Besides, the firm is also active as private equity investor in firms focused on the energy transformation, for instance investing in “Carbon Regeneration”, “Climate Friendly” or “Wattwatchers”.

3. Artha India Ventures (Mumbai, India)

Artha India Vetures, which was set up in 2015, acts as family office for the Damani family. The firm is an active startup investor with more than 100 portfolio companies. In our keyword analysis, the family office reached a renewable energy keyword rate of 2%. The Indian investment firm has already realized several renewable energy projects. For instance, solar farms in Kurukshetra, Lonavla and Thane, as well as a wind farm in Jodhpur.

How many family offices are investing in renewable energy?

Our keyword crawler found out that 160 global single family offices are mentioning renewable energy keywords on their websites. This includes family office investors like the Libra Group, Kilara Capital, Wirtgen Invest or Artha Indiva Ventures. Based on more than 1,600 total analyzed family offices, that leads to a rate of 11.2% of family office mentioning renewables. Since it is a fast moving sector, we assume that there are 150-250 family offices already active in renewable energy, and further 100-200 more that are considering renewable energy investments.

Investments in wind parks, solar farms and green tech startups

During our research, we found a few patterns how family offices invest in renewable energy. Many family offices are directly investing in renewable energy assets, in specific: wind parks and solar farms. However, this requires in-depth knowledge of the green energy sector. A number of family offices are hence investing in renewable energy investors and developers, instead. While other family offices are either investing in funds or green tech startups.

In this list we combine two unique assets: our global database with more than 1,600 global single family offices and our expertise in building web crawlers and analysis tool. For this list, we checked if the websites of the family offices from our database cover renewable energy keywords, such as „renewables“, „solar“ or the translated versions thereof. This list includes all the data from our family office lists, as well as dedicated keyword analysis columns. The list include all family offices from our database that have at least 1 relevant renewable keyword occurrence.

Keyword Crawler Methodology

It would be close to impossible to check every family office website from our database for occurrences of renewable keywords. So, we implemented a Python-based web crawler that works in a 3 step process:

  1. Every website is crawled for subpages. This works like the Google crawler, recursively crawling through every family office website in our database.
  2. Then, based on the list of subpages, a keyword analysis is conducted for every subpage: we count how often the targeted keyword are mentioned and set it in relation with the total number of words. So, we calculate a couple of statistics (mentioned below) and also highlight the subpage with the highest number of occurrences.
  3. We combine the results with the data of our global family office database. So, you get a targeted list with relevant family offices in the target area.

Keyword-related data points included in the list

First, the here offered list includes all the columns and data points of our regular family office list, including contact details, detailed investment focus information, executives and background information. Then, this information is extended by the results of our keyword analysis, namely:

  • total_frequency (e.g.: 12) – total counted number of keywords on family office website
  • average_keyword_rate (e.g. 0.2) – average rate of keyword occurrences per subpage in relation with total number of words
  • most_common_keyword (e.g. „renewables“) – most counted keyword on family office website
  • most_common_keyword_frequency (e.g. 12) – number of times the most common keyword was counted
  • sub_url_highest_rate (e.g. https://familyofficeabc.de/renewables) – sub url with the highest number of found keywords
  • highest_rate (e.g. 0.3) – highest keyword rate per subpage
  • frequency_per_keyword: {‚renewables’: 2, ‘solar’: 143, ‘photovoltaic’: 7, ‘renewable’: 172, ‘erneuerbare’: 0, ‘renouvelables’: 0, ‘renovables’: 5, ‘renováveis’: 0, ‘rinnovabili’: 0} – dictionary of number of keyword occurrences per keyword

Analyzed keywords and crawler settings

Our crawler analyzed the family office websites for the following keywords: “renewables”,”solar”,”photovoltaic”,”renewable”,”erneuerbare”, “renouvelables”, “renovables”, “renováveis”,”rinnovabili”

Thereby, we cover renewable keywords in the most important languages for the countries covered in our database. We only focused on the solar keyword to avoid false-positives, since „wind“ has its own translation in many of the covered languages and can also be used in various different contexts. Our crawler analyzed every family office website for at least 60 seconds.

Pros and cons of our keyword-based approach

Our list of the 150 largest Renewable Energy Single Family Offices is an excellent way to make initial contact with family offices active in the sector of renewable energy. With the help of our Python-Tool, we were able to identify the most relevant family offices in this field. However, our approach has two possible sources of error. First, our crawler can only scan for keywords that are actually mentioned on the website. If, contrary to the trend of recent years, family offices do not disclose their investments in the field of renewable energy or do not have a website at all, we cannot identify the relevant players. Furthermore, we cannot interpret the context of the keyword mentions. For example, if a family office distances itself from investments in renewable energy, it would still appear in the list. Finally, in rare cases we cannot deliver results if our tool is blocked by a website.

All in all, we are convinced that our list offers a highly relevant starting point for identifying the most relevant renewable energy focused family offices.

We are a Spanish solar energy project development firm. We are using this list to get in touch with new possible investors. Many family office contacts in the list are really valuable for us. The keyword score helps us to directly approach the most relevant ones. Some family offices with low scores are not so relevant, but we anticipated that
