How many family offices are investing in the crypto sector?

Our keyword crawler identified 110 single family offices that invest in cryptocurrencies, blockchain startups, DeFi and Web3 applications. Based on a total number of 1,600 global family offices in our database, that leads to a coverage rate of 6.7%. This shows that the crypto sector is still rather unexplored by family office investors. Our list includes firms like Winklevoss Capital, Nikolajsen Capital and Double Peak.

Investments in cryptocurrencies, blockchain startups, Web3 and DeFi

Our research team analyzed the investment patterns of single family offices in the crypto sector. While we can see that some family offices are relying for their crypto strategies on third-party asset managers, many family offices are also directly investing in startups and cryptocurrencies. This can mean direct investments in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum, or in startups in the decentralized finance (DeFi) space or in Web3 ventures.

In this list we combine two unique assets: our global database with more than 1,600 global single family offices and our expertise in building web crawlers and analysis tool. For this list, we checked if the websites of the family offices from our database cover cryptocurrency keywords, such as „crypto“ or „blockchain“. This list includes all the data from our family office lists, as well as dedicated keyword analysis columns. The list include all family offices from our database that have at least 1 relevant crypto keyword occurrence.

Keyword Crawler Methodology

To manually search our database of the largest family offices with over 1600 entries for crypto-keywords would be very inefficient. So, we implemented a Python-based web crawler that works in a 3 step process:

  1. Each website of the family offices contained in our database is searched for subpages. This works similar to a Google crawler that crawls the pages recursively.
  2. Starting from the identified subpages, each one is searched for the relevant keywords. The analysis counts how often the targeted keywords are mentioned and are set it in relation with the total number of words. We then calculate various statistics (mentioned below).
  3. We combine the results of the analysis with the data from our family office database to create a specified list of family offices that deal with crypto.

Results of the keyword analysis: data points included in the list

First, just like our regular family office list, our crypto family office list contains all the usual columns and data points such as contact details, detailed investment focus information, executives and background information. The information is enriched with the results of our keyword analysis, namely:

  • total_frequency (e.g.: 16) – total counted occurrences of keywords on family office website
  • average_keyword_rate (e.g. 0.1) – average rate of keyword occurrences per subpage in relation with total number of words
  • most_common_keyword (e.g. „cryptocurrency“) – keyword that was counted the most often on family office website
  • most_common_keyword_frequency (e.g. 10) – number of times the most common keyword was counted
  • sub_url_highest_rate (e.g. https://familyofficeabc.de/crypto) – sub url with the highest number of found keywords
  • highest_rate (e.g. 0.1) – highest keyword rate per subpage
  • frequency_per_keyword: {‘cryptocurrency’: 0, ‘crypto’: 828, ‘bitcoin’: 2078, ‘ethereum’: 0, ‘eth’: 1, ‘blockchain’: 0} – dictionary of number of keyword occurrences per keyword

Analyzed keywords and crawler settings

Our crawler analyzed the family office websites for the following keywords: “cryptocurrency”, “crypto”, “bitcoin”, “ethereum”, “eth”, “blockchain”

Thereby, we cover the most important crypto-currencies and crypto-keywords for every family office covered in our database. Our crawler analyzed every family office website for at least 60 seconds.

Pros and cons of our keyword-based approach

Our list offers an ideal starting point to get in touch with individual family offices in the field of cryptocurrency and blockchain. By crawling the websites of family offices and calculating the frequency of occurrence of keywords, we have managed to identify the most relevant family offices. However, our approach has two potential sources of error. Firstly, our keyword crawler can only work if the family offices report transparently about their business activities or have a public website. This is often the case, as many family offices have started to communicate their investments in recent years. Secondly, we cannot interpret the quality of the keyword mentions. For example, if a family office writes an article about why it does not invest in cryptocurrencies, it would still show up in the list. Furthermore, we cannot provide results if the website actually blocks our crawler (which is rarely the case).

All in all, we are convinced that our list offers a highly relevant starting point for identifying the most relevant crypto and blockchain focused family offices.
