James is executive chairman at investment firm Blackstone, his net worth is estimated at $1.9BN. Alto is an investment platform to add alternative assets to Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs). Alternative IRA investing through Alto

Through the Nashville-based startup Alto, customers can invest in “startups, growth comapnies, real estate, loans and digital assets” through “The Alternative IRA™”. Thereby, investors can diversify their retirement portfolio and possibly generate higher returns. Investors can create an account on the Alto website. Alto works together with crowdfunding providers and digital asset exchanges. In the following, Alto automates the investment process and builds up a diversified portfolio for investors. For example, Alto is cooperating with AngelList, Carofin, Equityzen, ForgeGlobal, Wefunder and YieldStreet.

$5.4M seed funding round led by Tony James Family Office and Moment Ventures

The recent funding round was led by Jefferson River Capital (Tony James Family Office) and Palo-Alto-based venture capital fund Moment Ventures. Additional investors include Sequoia Capital’s Scout Fund, Amplify L.A. and Foundation Capital. Hamilton Evan “Tony” James joined the asset management firm “The Blackstone Group” in 2002 as chief operating officer (COO). He is actively investing in startups, real estate and philanthropic causes. Other investments of Jefferson River Capital include Procryion’s $16M Series C funding round or Digital Asset’s $40M Series B funding round. In August 2018, the family office hired Bill Helm to oversee real estate investments.
