The Walton family – the world’s largest retail clan

The Walton empire was founded by Bud and Sam Walton, who co-founded the world’s largest retailer, Walmart. The company’s success began in 1962 and has grown into a multinational retailing company operating thousands of hypermarkets, grocery stores and department stores. Today, Walmart operates more than 10,500 stores in 19 countries and employs more than 2.1 million people. The success of the business is the foundation of the Walton family’s wealth, estimated at around $267 billion. This makes Sam Walton’s children, Jim, Alice and Ben, the richest non-royal family in the world. Such a fortune needs proper management, but is there a Walton family office?

Walton Enterprises the Walton Clan`s family office

Walton Enterprises LLC (WEI) is an American investment firm based in Bentonville, Arkansas, that operates as a family office managing the wealth of the Walton family, the owners of Walmart. Not much is known about the family’s investment activities. Various sources report that WEI mainly invests in ETFs, but also holds stakes in various companies such as Apollo Global Management, Snowflake Inc. and Pinduoduo.

Zoma Capital & Madrone Capital Partners, the separate Walton family offices

In addition to Walton Enterprises, various members of the Walton clan have their own family offices, which manage their personal wealth. Ben Walton and his wife founded Zoma Capital, while  Rob Walton manages his wealth through Madrone Capital Partners. Madrone Capital Partners mostly invests in late-stage as well as early-stage private equity energy investments and energy technology deals. Their latest investments contain funding for  N5 Now, Cue, Brax or Uplift. Similar to that Zoma Capital invests in sustainable solutions to environmental and social problems. The geographic focus of their investments lies in Colorado and Chile, where they build energy and development projects. While Ben and Jim focus on the family business and their family office activities, Alice concentrates on curating art. She opened the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in 2011. Zoma Capital also belongs to the Top family offices in Denver.
