The Belgium businessman, investor and philanthropist
Filip Balcaen is a well-known Belgian entrepreneur who has been involved in various industrial activities. As the son of Paul Balcaen, who founded Balta in 1964 he took over the company and led it to a market leader. He became CEO and Chairman of Balta in 1997 and oversaw its expansion into an international group specializing in floor and wall coverings. In 2004, Balta underwent a major restructuring. The private equity firm Doughty Hanson acquired a 70% stake in the company for €600 million. The Balcaen family retained a 20% shareholding. In 1997, the Balcaen family, together with Balta, founded IVC, a company specializing in vinyl flooring. In 2015, Filip Balcaen sold IVC, including its debts, to the U.S.-listed flooring company Mohawk for €1 billion. With his earned wealth he diversified his portfolio and invested in various sectors like real estate, philanthropic projects, and (un)listed companies. Many of his investments are managed by the Balcaen family office Baltisse.
The investment focus of Baltisse
Baltisse, the family office of Filip Balcaen, was established in 2007 and is headquartered in Ghent. It focuses on three main investment areas: private equity, real estate and capital markets. Its geographic focus lays mainly in Belgium and the Netherlands.
In private equity, the Balcaen family office prioritizes investments in companies operating in the industrial and consumer sectors. These include health and self-care, B2B services and energy services. Baltisse typically invests in companies with an EBITDA of between €5 million and €50 million and invests between €25 million and €250 million. Exemplary private equity investments include Baobab Collection, Recticel, Origis Energy, and Fagron. In real estate, Baltisse has a diversified portfolio of properties in Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Romania, Poland, and the United States. It especially focuses on urban locations. Baltisse also invests in listed companies on the European and American stock markets.
