The Brenninkmeijer (or Brenninkmeyer) family is a prominent Dutch family with German roots, known for its ownership of Cofra Holding AG. This holding company includes the well-known fashion retailer C&A, which was originally founded in 1841 by Clemens and August Brenninkmeijer. With more than 500 members, the Brenninkmeijer family is one of the wealthiest in Europe, with an estimated fortune of more than €25 billion. Despite their influence, the Brenninkmeijers are famously private, avoiding public appearances and media attention.

The development of the Brenninkmeijer business

The family business in textiles began in the 17th century when the family started selling cloth. Since then, the family has become one of the most important families in retail. Since the 1990s, the family has also diversified into real estate, private equity and financial services. To manage these diverse interests, the Brenninkmeijer family established Cofra Holding AG in 2001, based in Zug, Switzerland. Cofra manages the family’s ventures under one roof. Today, textile retailing accounts for only about one-third of Cofra’s total turnover. Through its assets, Cofra Holding AG employs approximately 50,000 people worldwide.
