Sergey Mikhaylovich Brin is an American computer scientist and internet entrepreneur. Together with Larry Page, he co-founded Google. He earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Maryland, following in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps by studying mathematics, as well as computer science. After graduation, he enrolled at Stanford University to acquire a Ph.D. in computer science. There he met Page, with whom he built a web search engine. The program became popular at Stanford, and they suspended their Ph.D. studies to start up Google in Susan Wojcicki‘s garage in Menlo Park. Today he is the 10th richest person in the world with an estimated net worth of 54 billion U.S. dollars.

After meeting Larry Page at Stanford University during an orientation for new students, Brin and Page soon became friends and started to develop a search engine in order to process in their PhD studies, which they both have suspended until today. In August 1996, the initial version of Google was made available on the Stanford Web site. In 1998, Brin and Page together founded the predecessor of Google, then named “Googol”. Today Google is the most frequently used search engine in the whole internet and offers a broad variety of additional services such as Google Maps, Google Translate and many more. The mother company of Google, Alphabet, that was formed in 2015, generated more than 136 billion U.S. dollars in revenues and employed almost 100,000 people in 2018.

Together with his ex-wife, Sergey Brin founded the Brin Wojcicki Foundation in 2004, which is concerned with philanthropic investments in the fields of, for example, human services and Parkinson disease.
