The Melbourne-based single family office of Daniel Besen has committed to Climate Tech Partners as an anchor investor. Climate Tech Partners is a new venture capital fund that focuses on early-stage investments in energy, transport, logistics, and industrials, aiming to accelerate decarbonization through innovative software and hardware solutions.
Founded by Patrick Sieb and Tom Kline, Climate Tech Partners leverages its founders’ extensive experience across corporate, startup, and government sectors to attract corporate partners and investment opportunities. The fund is nearing its first close, with commitments exceeding $35 million of its $45 million target.
The investment decision was made after Daniel Besen and his family office evaluated over 30 potential managers. According to a statement, Besen selected Climate Tech Partners for its differentiated model that seeks to de-risk venture investing by partnering with large corporates to identify demand-driven opportunities and accelerate portfolio companies through corporate trials and contracts.
Besen Family Office CEO Duncan Murray noted that climate technology is driven by significant macroeconomic factors and aligns well with long-term trends such as energy security and domestic manufacturing. The partnership with Climate Tech Partners allows the family office to diversify its investments at the venture stage, gaining exposure to emerging technologies.
Further notable direct investments of the BESEN family office
In addition to its investment in Climate Tech Partners, the Daniel Besen family office, known as BESEN, has participated in the acquisition of Sydney-based babywear brand Snuggle Hunny Kids in 2022. The acquisition was led by Julie Mathers, founder of vegan and eco-friendly retailer Flora & Fauna, in collaboration with Arcus Partners. BESEN served as the lead investor in this transaction.
Many investments of the BESEN family office are pursued indirectly via Arcus Partners. For instance, in 2024, the firm acquired a majority stake in the Australian AdTech software firm Sesimi.
