KIRKBI Climate A/S, the climate-focused investment arm of the Kristiansen family office, has made a follow-on investment in UK-based Highview Power to support phase one of its Hunterston grid stability project in Scotland. The capital is part of a £130 million funding round joined by existing investors and partners, bringing Highview’s total funding to over £500 million. The Hunterston project, described as a “stability island,” is designed to provide critical support to the UK’s electricity grid by enhancing long-duration energy storage and enabling greater renewable energy integration. The development’s first phase will focus on delivering immediate grid stability, followed by integration of Highview’s proprietary cryogenic energy storage technology. The investment builds on KIRKBI Climate’s earlier participation in the 2024 Carrington project — a 300MWh liquid air energy storage facility near Manchester — reinforcing Highview’s role in deploying commercial-scale storage systems across the UK. Recognised by Ofgem under the Cap and Floor mechanism for long-duration storage, these projects are instrumental in supporting the UK’s net-zero transition and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Given the novelty of Highview’s long-duration storage technology (e.g., the Carrington energy park will be the first commercial liquid-air long-duration storage project), KIRKBI’s investment shows the important role of family offices investing in novel clean energy technologies in Europe.
