The Canadian business magnate and investor
Jim Pattison is a well-known Canadian billionaire and the Founder, Chairman and CEO of the Jim Pattison Group. His career began in the 1950s selling used cars. He started his first business in 1961 when he bought a GM dealership. His car dealership grew to become the largest car retailer in Western Canada. In 2018, the company owned 25 dealerships. From a pure car dealership, Pattison developed the Jim Pattison Group into a diversified holding company. The group operates in 25 industries, including automotive, real estate, farm equipment, food and beverage, entertainment, export, finance, advertising, media and magazine distribution. Today the company has an annual turnover of $16 billion and employs around 50,000 people. Through his business success, Jim Pattison has amassed a fortune of $9.1 billion, making him one of Canada’s richest people.
The Jim Pattison Group as his `family office`
Despite his age, Jim Pattison is still actively seeking new investment opportunities. Although he does not have a personal Jim Pattison Family Office, he manages his assets and looks for new investment opportunities through the Jim Pattison Group. His company’s business strategy is growth through acquisition, so the Jim Pattison Group is an active investor in a variety of sectors, mainly in established companies. In 2024, the company acquired several car dealerships, including Shaker Auto Lease and Jamieson Car and Truck Rental. In addition to his business activities, Pattison is active in philanthropy through the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation. The foundation was established in 1992 to support the needs of children and mothers in Western Canada.
