French Family Offices: How to Reach Paris Capital When the Holding Company Has No Website

French Family Offices: How to Reach Paris Capital

France has some of the largest and most internationally active family offices in Europe, and the worst public contact data of any major European market. Both facts have the same cause. French family capital sits inside holding companies with names that reveal nothing, and those holdings deliberately publish as little as the law allows. If you want to reach Paris family money, the research problem comes before the pitch problem.

All figures below come from the familyofficehub.io database, last full review June 2026. We have documented family offices since 2018 and check every entry by hand.

How many family offices are there in France?

Our database documents 59 French single family offices plus around 80 French multi family offices. The concentration is close to total:

  • Paris: 40 of 59 documented single family offices, including offices whose families live nowhere near the capital
  • Lyon adds a small cluster, with the remainder spread across Neuilly, Puteaux and the Lille and Roubaix industrial belt
  • The count is smaller than Germany or the UK, but the average cheque is not. French family offices are among the most active direct investors on the continent

The structural point matters more than the count. Many of the most significant French family investment vehicles are holding companies rather than entities that call themselves family offices. Groupe Artémis holds the Pinault family’s stake in Kering and in Christie’s. Financière Agache is the Arnault family’s holding structure. Association Familiale Mulliez coordinates the interests of a family that controls Auchan, Decathlon and Leroy Merlin. None of these will appear in a list built by searching for the phrase “family office”.

What do French family offices invest in?

Across the 59 documented French single family offices:

  • Private equity: 68%, by far the dominant focus, weighted towards control positions and high profile restructurings
  • Real estate: 53%
  • Venture capital: 48%, concentrated in Paris and often run through a dedicated vehicle separate from the main holding
  • Capital markets and financial products: 24%

The French pattern of the last few years has been consistent: large domestic restructurings, international private credit and asset management platforms, and selective venture exposure through separate arms. Our review of the top investments of French family offices in 2025 covers the deals that defined the year.

Why an AI chatbot cannot build this list for you

France is where AI generated lists fail hardest, and the reason is structural rather than incidental.

The connection between a family and its holding company is often documented only in French language filings, in the local business press, or in transaction reporting that has since disappeared behind paywalls. A model cannot reliably tell you that Téthys Invest is the Bettencourt-Meyers vehicle, that Krefeld is associated with Hermès heirs, or which of a family’s several structures actually makes investment decisions. It will guess, and the guess will look exactly as confident as the correct answers around it.

There is a second problem specific to this market, and we would rather state it plainly than let you discover it after buying. We hold a general office email address for only 54% of French entries, the lowest coverage of any market we track. French offices simply publish fewer addresses. What we do hold is strong: executive names for 90%, the family behind the vehicle for 92%, which is our highest attribution rate anywhere, a phone number for 70% and a postal address for 95%. In France, the family attribution is the valuable field, because it is the thing that cannot be looked up.

Five French family offices worth understanding before you pitch

All five are publicly documented and we have written about each one.

Groupe Arnault and Financière Agache together form the Arnault family structure. Groupe Arnault focuses heavily on technology venture capital with a portfolio of more than forty investments and exits including Netflix, Spotify, Airbnb and Slack, while Financière Agache was restructured in 2022 as the durable ownership vehicle for the family’s LVMH position. By our analysis it is the largest French family office. See our analysis: What is the largest French family office by AUM.

Groupe Artémis is the Pinault family’s principal investment and holding company, founded in the early 1990s. It holds the controlling position in Kering, owns Christie’s, took a majority stake in Creative Artists Agency in 2023 and invests in technology through the Red River West fund. Téthys Invest is the vehicle of Françoise Bettencourt Meyers and family, built on the L’Oréal stake and structured much like a private equity fund. Its healthcare activity, including a multi billion euro position in animal health group Ceva Santé Animale, makes it one of the more relevant French offices for life sciences fundraisers. Covered in The Bettencourt family office: Téthys Invest and in Does the Bettencourt family have a single family office.

Wendel is the listed investment company controlled by the Wendel family, an industrial dynasty with roots going back centuries. Its acquisition of a controlling stake in US private credit manager Monroe Capital shows the French appetite for scaled asset management platforms rather than one off deals.

Association Familiale Mulliez coordinates one of the largest family fortunes in France, behind Auchan, Decathlon, Leroy Merlin and Kiabi, with Creadev as its dedicated investment arm. It is the clearest case of a structure that no keyword search would surface. Background on Wikipedia.

How to actually make contact: a five step process

1. Map the structure before you write. French families routinely run a holding company, a separate venture arm and a philanthropic foundation. Pitching a seed round to the holding company gets you nowhere when the venture arm is a different entity with a different team. Our list flags which vehicle does what.

2. Use the phone. With email coverage at 54%, France is the one European market where the phone number is the more reliable channel. We hold one for 70% of entries. A short, formal, French language call to a holding company reception routes further than an English email.

3. Write in French. This is not optional at the first touch. An English cold approach to a Paris holding signals that you have not done the work, and French business correspondence has fixed formulas that are easy to get right and conspicuous to get wrong.

4. Derive the executive address when it matters. We carry executive names for 90% of French entries, which is enough input for standard email finding tooling. The method is in our free tutorial: the 5-step process to finding family office CEO emails.

5. Expect relationship gatekeeping. More than any other European market, French family capital moves through advisers, private banks and long standing personal networks. A warm introduction converts several times better here, and a curated list is how you work out who to ask for the introduction to.

What to put in the first email

  • Subject line: secteur, stade, montant. In French, no marketing language.
  • Salutation: Madame, Monsieur, with the correct title. Formality is expected and its absence is noticed.
  • Line one: why this house specifically, ideally naming something they already hold.
  • Body: the business, the numbers, the raise, the terms.
  • Ask: one meeting, one clear proposed next step.

Which French list to buy

France is the one market where we would tell most buyers to take both lists rather than one. Fifty single family offices is a small target set, and the French multi family office segment is unusually strong, staffed by professionals who exist precisely to be approached.

Given the email coverage limits described above, budget time for the derivation step rather than expecting a ready made inbox route to every office. Preview files are available on request at contact [at] familyofficehub.io.

Mistakes that get you ignored in this market

  • Assuming the holding name identifies the family. In France it usually does not, and getting the family wrong ends the conversation immediately.
  • Approaching in English. Acceptable at the second meeting, rarely at the first email.
  • Pitching the wrong entity. Holding, venture arm and foundation have different mandates and different people.
  • Underestimating the market because it is small. 59 documented offices, but among the largest direct investors in Europe by cheque size.

Are French family offices open to foreign fundraisers?
Yes, and increasingly so, but the first contact has to be in French and has to demonstrate that you understand the holding structure you are writing to. Offices with international mandates will switch to English once a conversation is running.

What is the difference between a French family holding and a family office?
Often nothing in practice. A large share of French family capital is deployed through a holding company that also owns the operating business, which functions as a single family office without ever using the term. Our list documents both types and flags which offices operate as a holding for the family business.

How often is the French list updated?
Two to three times a year. Updates within twelve months of purchase are free and are sent automatically by email.
