The Canadian computer scientist, businessman, philanthropist, and venture capitalist
David Cheriton is a professor emeritus at Stanford University, where he is also known as the ‘Professor Billionaire’. During his university career, Cheriton developed and created several operating systems and mentored future founders and successful entrepreneurs such as Sergey Brin, Larry Page, Kenneth Duda and Kieran Harty. In addition to his academic career, Cheriton became a highly successful businessman and investor. Together with his partner Andreas von Bechtolsheim, he has founded several companies. His first company, Granite Systems, was sold to Cisco Systems in 1996 for $220 million. With his newfound wealth, he was able to invest in Google at a very early stage. Thanks to this investment, his wealth has increased massively and is estimated to be worth around $15.7 billion in 2024. We take a closer look at whether David Cheriton has a family office managing his wealth.
The active venture capitalist with no family office
As mentioned above, David Cheriton is an active investor in a variety of start-ups, and after his early investment in Google, has backed companies mainly in the technology sector. He was an early investor in VMware, a leader in computer virtualization, and data warehousing company Aster Data Systems. He was also an early investor in Tintri, Zunavision and most recently Otter.ai. The Canadian professor has also founded several companies himself, from Kealia to Arista Networks to Apstra. As far as we know, there is no David Cheriton family office involved in his investments. Instead, he manages his wealth himself.
